One of the core problems with the Inheritance Cycle and a lot of other bad stories for that matter is this: Their authors refuse to take criticism. Speaking as an author on fanfiction.net, taking criticism isn't always easy. Sometimes the people who give it aren't exactly polite and it can be tempting to lash out when their critiques are abusive. Especially when you've gotten a lot of other positive reviews.
However, this is a major trap you need to avoid. The proper response is to look through their review and see if you can find anything in it which makes sense. That is the key to improving yourself. Listening to what people have to say and acting on it. Even if they are abusive in the way they phrase it as they, unfortunately, sometimes are.
Paolini didn't do that. All evidence is that he doesn't even take courteous criticism. Instead, he chooses to exist in a bubble and convince himself he was the next Tolkien. Anyone who didn't like his book, therefore, must have just been jealous. And since in his mind he was already the next Tolkien he got worse, rather than better.
Imagine what the Inheritance Cycle might have been like if Paolini had listened to what people had to say and worked constantly to improve himself? Though it isn't just him. From what I've heard Stephenie Meyer is just as bad if not worse.
Why do you think it is that so many authors who get early success end up so arrogant?
